A family owned and operated business, Grass-Lunning Simmentals is located in Southeast, MN. Set amid corn and soybean country, the seed stock operation is a rare breed to its area. However, the GLS crew doesn’t let geographical location hinder their enthusiasm and high set goals for producing some of the most powerful genetics in the Simmental breed. “We take pride in offering commercial customers genetics that work in the pasture and feedlot, as well as provide their son or daughter with a project for the show ring,” explains Bob Grass, who with his wife, Becky, owns Grass-Lunning Simmentals.
“This is a family operation, from feeding the cows, to planning potential matings, to working on the cattle we exhibit at national shows, our family works together,” states Becky. Not only has the GLS program collected several championship banners at national shows, they have grown an impressive and well known herd sire battery as well. Popular A.I. sires include GLS Avenger A68, GLS Integrate Z3, and GLS New Direction X184. Check out our SIRES page for your Grass-Lunning semen needs! By targeting high growth traits and maintaining eye appeal with maternal qualities in their females, Grass-Lunning Simmentals has built a solid reputation for producing high quality cattle. The GLS program also utilizes a strong embryo transfer program. “By flushing our elite females we are able to offer even more of our top end genetics. This enables us to deliver superior genetics at a higher quantity,” explains Bob.
The operation calves approximately 275 predominately black cows each year. Recently, the family acquired the herd of fellow Simmental breeder Tom Golly, also from Minnesota. “We saw the need to develop more bulls in this area for our customers,” addresses Bob. “With ample labor and resources, we felt it was a great opportunity to expand our cow herd.” The second Saturday of February the Grass-Lunning operation hosts their annual production sale, the “Bulls Eye Bonanza” which hosts 75 bulls along with 35 bred heifers and 35 open heifers. Aside from their own sale, they also occasionally market females on select Simmental state and national consignment sales.
